Providence 57th Most Educated City

The greater Providence urban area came in at a disappointingly 57th place in a list of the most educated cities in America, compiled by the Brookings Institution. (Click here to see interactive map.)

Just about every other surrounding New England city was ahead: Hartford ranked 14th; New Haven, 26th; Worcester, 20th; and Springfield 52nd. Not surprisingly, Boston was fifth. The most educated city was Washington, DC.

The study ranked cities across the nation based on the proportion of adults 25 and older who had at least a Bachelor’s degree. For the purposes of making comparisons across the country, the study grouped Providence, New Bedford, and Fall River as one urban area. Just 28 percent of adults in the area had at least a Bachelor's degree.
