Providence College To Host First Alzheimer's Walk

This Saturday, as part of Alzheimer’s Awareness month, Providence College will host A Walk To Remember, the school's first Alzheimer’s Walk. The 5K event will also feature guest speakers, music, food, and is open to both walkers and runners.

The walk will take place at Providence College's New Track and Field Facility; with registration at 9:30 AM, and the 5k beginning at 10:00 AM.

The event's organizer, Michelle LaFrance, is a Providence College senior and formed the event in honor of her father, who was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia at age 66. All proceeds from the walk will benefit the Alzheimer’s Association, Rhode Island Chapter.

"My goal is to increase the public’s understanding of the challenge of identifying symptoms of dementia and to raise awareness among young adults at Providence College about this devastating disease," said LaFrance. "Although we have had events such as Relay for Life and events that support diseases such as breast cancer, this is the first Alzheimer's event at Providence College."

Those who raise $50 or more in donations will receive a free t-shirt, and those who raise more than $100 will be entered into a drawing to receive a door prize. Donations will support research into prevention, treatments, and a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Participants can register online, or in-person the day of the event; registration forms are available at Providence College's Health Policy and Management Office.
