Providence Community Library to Celebrate Armenian Heritage Month
April 24, 1915 marked the beginning of the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks. This year marks the 100th anniversary of that genocide, and the Library is holding these events as “a celebration of Armenian culture, and as a remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.”
On Monday, April 13 at 4pm, the library will hold a children’s workshop on the Armenian alphabet and language. On Tuesday, April 14, there will be a course on Armenian Costume and Style, where children will learn about traditional Armenian costume and clothing throughout history, as well as shields, musical instruments, and other items. They will then work on art projects based on what they have learned.

There is also a month-long Armenian Heritage and Culture Contest for youth. The contest will have three categories: Poetry, Art, and Photography. Each category will have first, second, and third place prizes. Prizes will be awarded at a celebration on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 4:00-5:00 PM at the Smith Hill Library. Refreshments will be served.
