Providence GOP Leaders Demand Mayor Keep Davey Lopes Pool Open

Several Republican leaders from Providence's South Side have come out in strong opposition to Angel Taveras' plans to close the Davey Lopes Pool permanently. The pool, located on Dudley Street, has become a controversial political focal point since its closing this past summer.

Despite efforts from the state's Republican Party to develop a plan for the pool's repair and restoration, including the Black Contractors Association's offer to provide free labor for the necessary repairs, the Mayor has sought bids from contractors to permanently close the pool by filling it with concrete.

GOP Ward Chairmen David Talan (Ward 8), Russ Hryzan (Ward 10), and Victor Regino (Ward 11) have demanded that the Mayor change his position, and accept bids to repair, restore and reopen the pool at the Davey Lopes Recreation Center. They insist that their intentions are not political, but rather to prevent the destruction of an asset that is important to the community.

"It is rare for a public issue to be such a clear case of right vs. wrong. " Said Regino, who also serves as Vice-Chair of the Providence Republican Party, "This pool is an important part of our community.  We have to keep it open, for our children and for our families."
