About Incident
Shortly after noon on Saturday, police said they were on patrol in the area of Atwells Avenue and Manton Avenue when they observed a Silver Acura SUV speeding on Atwells.
Police said they then followed the vehicle when it began operating erratically. The vehicle then pulled into the King Street Commons Apartments parking lot where police said it appeared to park.
As officers attempted to approach the vehicle on foot, they said the vehicle operator drove in reverse nearly striking the police cruiser, fleeing the scene.
Police said they then continued to pursue the SUV from a distance that was continuing to speed and operate in a dangerous manner, colliding with at least two other vehicles.
According to police, the SUV then struck a tree on Plainfield Street.
As officers attempted to approach vehicle, police said the passenger and the driver — later identified as Edward Robinson, age 34, tried to flee on foot.
The vehicle was not put in park, say police, and it slid backward, striking a police cruiser.
Police said they were immediately able to detain the passenger at which time he said he had a “legal” gun in the vehicle.
Upon searching the SUV, police said they found multiple guns -- with obliterated serial numbers -- and magazines with live ammunition, which police seized.
Police said they were alerted to Robinson fleeing into a nearby barbershop at which point he was located and arrested without incident.
Robinson is facing multiple traffic violation charges and police say other charges are likely pending.
