“The Providence School Board is pleased to recommend moving forward with contract negotiations with Christopher Maher to serve as our superintendent of schools,” said Board President, Nicholas Hemond. “I want to thank all the members of our search committee for their service, hard work and spirit of community engagement.

The search process included the creation of a 28 member search committee which held three community  forums in October 2015. Following the formal advertisement of the position in February, the search committee received 22 applications. Six applicants were recommended for further review including phone interviews, answers to written questions and conversations with references.  Five finalist candidates were interviewed in-person by the School Board.

Big Challenges

Maher faces big challenges. Providence schools are among the lowest testing schools and many of the schools are in need of major renovation.

“The Providence School Board will now enter into superintendent contract negotiations. Once a contract has been agreed to and approved by the Board, it will be referred to the Providence City Council for final adoption,” according to a release from the department’s public relations firm.

Maher has served as Interim Superintendent of Providence Schools since June 2015,. Maher has worked in the public education sector throughout his career, with a focus on improving opportunities for students in urban districts. He comes to Providence from Mass Insight Education, a nonprofit organization that focuses nationally on school improvement and district transformation.

He holds a Graduate Certificate in School Administration and Supervision from Johns Hopkins University, and a Master of Public Administration from New York University. He earned his bachelor's degree from the College of Wooster in Ohio, according to the release.
