The head of the Providence Teachers Union is accusing the Rhode Island Commissioner of Education of running a campaign to disparage union leadership -- with "lies and manipulation."

On Friday, PTU President Maribeth Calabro accused Angélica Infante-Green of undertaking the effort.

“It seems that Angelica has enlisted folks to disparage the PTU leadership after our overwhelming and unprecedented vote of no confidence in her and the super's ‘leadership,’ said Calabro, of the PTU's vote of no confidence in Infante Green.

“I find it all so fascinating that she can lie, manipulate and gaslight and still folks think she is doing the right thing by students,” Calabro added. “I take great solace in the fact that there is significant and mounting evidence that their leadership is about adult control and adult-centered beliefs.  I am fully confident in the solutions and proposals we have put across the table as they are student-centered and elevate family and community engagement and participation!”

“Folks can keep posting things, carrying her water and trying to make problems for our organization but we know the truth, we are living in this disastrous so-called takeover and we know the truth!” she added.

On Thursday, Calabro engaged in a public battle with the head of the League of Charter Schools, Keith Oliveira, who said parents had lost confidence in Calabro.

The heated fight is currently over legislation at the State House to block the Rhode Island Board of Education’s approval to expand public charter school seats in the state.

The union wants a moratorium on the expansion, while Infante-Green and charter schools want the expanded opportunities that had already been approved.

In 2019, the Wall Street Journal called Providence Schools an "education horror show," after a report by Johns Hopkins stated that the city's schools were among the worst in the nation.
