VIDEO: Raimondo Launches 5th Annual Governor for a Day Essay Contest

Governor Gina Raimondo launched the fifth annual “Governor for a Day” essay contest on Friday in celebration of Women’s History Month.

The contest asks 5th to 8th-grade girls to answer the question, “What would you do as Rhode Island's Governor for a day?"

“Over the last year, we’ve seen young people speaking up and engaging in our democracy. We’ve also seen more women in public office than ever before. But women still make up less than a quarter of representatives in Congress and there are only nine female governors. You can’t be what you can’t see. Despite our progress, too many young girls grow up without seeing themselves represented in their government. It’s important to me that young girls know their ideas — and their futures — are limitless,” said Raimondo.

Interested in Applying

Interested applicants should apply by March 15 and answer the question in 400 words or fewer or in a one to two-minute video.

Students must submit the following information along with their essay or video:

  • Teacher’s Contact Information
  • Parent or Guardian Name(s)
  • Parent or Guardian Phone Number

 

Applicants may email their essays or videos as an attachment to [email protected].

The winner will be announced at the end of March, and will be "sworn in" as Rhode Island's Governor for a Day in April.

She will meet with Raimondo and other female elected officials.
