Raimondo’s 38 Studios Strategy: Bad Judgment, Bad Advice, or Just Good Ole RI Cronyism

Raimondo continues to block release of the RISP 38 Studios Interviews
Governor Gina Raimondo’s endless battle to block GoLocal’s effort to allow public access to the Rhode Island State Police interviews in the failed 38 Studios criminal investigation is perplexing. On Thanksgiving eve, Raimondo's attorney's files court documents to block the release of the files.

Why is a sitting Governor who claims to have had no culpability in the collapse of 38 Studios fighting in court, delaying, and blocking the release of the interviews?

On Thanksgiving eve, Raimondo filed a motion in Superior Court to dismiss GoLocal’s request, which asked the Court to require the Governor to order her appointees to release the documents.

Her explanations are contradictory, confusing, and now seem to be completely disingenuous.

After the Federal Bureau of Investigation this summer released their interview notes with Hillary Clinton, the precedent seemed to be set.  The FBI, the US Justice Department and even Clinton were comfortable with the transparency.

But, not Raimondo. She has issued multiple statements as to why she can’t, or won’t, request the State Police to release the documents.

There are only three viable explanations. We have dispensed with the idea that the Governor is not intellectually capable of understanding her role of chief executive or that she does not have the mental faculties to understand the important of this issue. The Governor is 45 years old and spent more than half her life in school and has degrees from Yale, Harvard and Oxford. Thus, one of the following must be true.

1) Bad judgment by the Governor — Why at the end of the criminal investigation this summer did she not direct the Rhode Island State Police to release these records to, de facto, end the 38 Studios era? Bad judgment? For someone who has complained about Rhode Islander's negativity, she seems to be stoking the cynicism fire with lots of gasoline.

2) Raimondo is getting bad advice — It may be that Raimondo is getting bad advice from her staff. The Governor in two years has already burned through a few Chiefs-of-Staff. As the Governor has given so many answers to the request to release 38 Studios State Police records, it is a possibility that she has gotten different advice from the revolving door of chiefs-of-staff and communication directors. But maybe the Governor should ask if any of her staff are trying to keep these documents secret to protect their friends. After all, Raimondo's Chief Legal Counsel had the same role for former Governor Don Carcieri.

3) Just good ole RI cronyism — Raimondo may have made mistakes in the past (hiring former Rep. Don Lally, using URI scholarship money to try and fly to Davos in Switzerland, approving “Warmer and Cooler,” et cetera) but this decision and the vigilance she is exercising in blocking the release of these documents is beginning to smell.

It smells like a desperate attempt to protect insiders — potentially her political donors and cronies.

The Governor can demonstrate leadership and drop the obstruction, direct the release of the 38 Studios documents, and give Rhode Islanders the opportunity to know the truth and move beyond this embarrassing black mark in Rhode Island’s business and political history.
