Resolution Proposed in Narragansett to Direct Police Not to Enforce Raimondo’s Coronavirus Orders

The President of the Narragansett Town Council wants town law enforcement to not enforce any of Raimondo's orders.
The President of the Town Council in Narragansett has introduced a resolution directing the Town Police Department to “not enforce the State of Rhode Island’s coronavirus-related executive orders.”

Matthew Mannix placed the resolution on the agenda for the upcoming Town Council meeting for Monday May 18, stating:

The Town of Narragansett recognizes the threat of the coronavirus to the physical being of its residents…and also recognizes that the restrictions imposed by many of these Coronavirus-related Executive Orders have imposed substantial harm to the emotional, spiritual, and financial well-being of its residents

The move comes after the police unions in Warwick and North Providence sent letters to Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo saying they will not enforce the state’s mask-wearing order; the Warwick Police Chief has since said that they would enforce it.

The Narragansett resolution however would not enforce any of Raimondo's orders, including those pertaining to business closures, restaurant constraints, social distancing, masks, and more.

Raimondo Calls Move “Mistake” and “Selfish”

Raimondo on Friday called the effort by Mannix a “huge mistake.”

“It’s so selfish to the people of Rhode Island,” said Raimondo at her daily coronavirus press briefing. “To jump the gun a couple of weeks before we’re ready…is a huge risk.”
