Rhode Island Foundation Awarded $15.6 Million in Grants First Half of 2014
“We connect the dreams of our donors with the needs of Rhode Islanders. By encouraging innovation, collaboration and advocacy, we empower nonprofits to take on the issues that are critical to moving the state forward,” said Neil Steinberg, the Foundation’s president and CEO.
The grants include:
• Support for the third round of Rhode Island Innovation Fellowships, made possible through the generosity of Letitia and John Carter. The 2014 recipients are working on creating a facility for the design and production of digitally printed textiles and the Eat Drink Rhode Island Central Market, which will include a public market, a commercial food production and processing facility and educational programs.

• $193,115 in organizational development grants to build the capacity of nonprofit groups including the Center for Southeast Asians, Save the Bay and the Rhode Island Health Center Association.
• $148,500 to food banks, homeless shelters and free clinics that provide needy Rhode Islanders with basic human needs including the East Bay Community Action Program, the Salvation Army and the Jonnycake Center of Peacedale.goo
“From nurturing Rhode Island thriving arts and culture sector to investing in the state’s capacity to withstand natural disasters, our investments target issues that will drive Rhode Island’s future,” said Daniel Kertzner, vice president for grant programs.
Other nonprofits received funding under the Foundation’s competitive strategy grant program, which targets seven sectors: arts and culture, children and families and basic human needs, economic security, education success, the environment and healthy lives.
Key strategy grants from the first half of 2014 are:
• Rhode Island Hospital was awarded $45,000 for the Mental Health Link, which connects young adults and family members to affordable and long-term outpatient psychiatric services.
• The Providence Children and Youth Cabinet received $75,000 to improve grades K-8 literacy skills, reduce chronic absenteeism and support high school students in the post-secondary enrollment process.
• The Center for Women and Enterprise was awarded $30,000 to expand its educational programs and consulting services for women who own or start small businesses.
