1. How are you working to make (the Rhode Island Republican Party) better?

VARGAS: The Rhode Island Republican Party has been veering away from its message rooted in liberty, small government, and the empowerment of all people. As a result, its reputation has been damaged for quite some time. I am working to better the Rhode Island Republican Party by engaging different communities across the state to find common ground in promoting conservative policies that can move our state forward, such as school choice, a smarter way of funding our infrastructure without tolls, criminal justice reform, and increasing take-home pay by lowering government spending rather than burdening small businesses. I am also working to make sure the party’s statewide candidates focus on engaging the cities, because the cities need conservative policies the most and they are necessary to win elections. Until they do that, I cannot truthfully say that the Rhode Island Republican Party has shown they want to represent cities like Providence and as a result I am running as an independent to represent my community rather than a Republican.

2. As an emerging leader what have you learned from success and failure?

VARGAS: I have learned to stay humble through success because there is always more work to be done, and I have learned that failure only exists if you learn nothing from a situation. I’m reminded of a quote from Robert F. Kennedy, which says “Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.”

3. Who has been your most important mentor and why?

VARGAS: My most important mentor would have to be my good friend, Vice Chair of the Rhode Island Republican Party, Chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Liberty Caucus, and owner of The Village Restaurant in Providence, Russ Hryzan. He was one of the first to welcome me into the realm of politics as I got involved in the gubernatorial race in 2014, and since I have known him, he has lead by example. He is always working to restore the principles of liberty, personal privacy, and small government in the Rhode Island Republican Party, all while always being there to guide me away from bad decisions and toward a constant focus on self-improvement and public service.
