RI Capitol Police Launch Recruitment Campaign

The Rhode Island State Police have launched a recruitment campaign for new Capitol Police Officers.

“Our goal is to attract a highly qualified group of diverse candidates who more accurately reflect the community we serve. We want to ensure we are attracting the best possible applicants who have the experience, skills, and commitment we seek in all of our officers,” said Colonel Assumpico.

The Job

The role of the Capitol Police is to provide police services and general security for the State Capitol and other state agencies and buildings.

Officers operate metal detectors and x-ray machines at the entrances to the State House, as well as all courthouses and several other state buildings.

They are responsible for screening employees and visitors, as well as preventing and detecting crimes and apprehending violators.

Applying for the Job

Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be at least 18 years old (no maximum age)
  • Meet the State of Rhode Island qualifications to carry weapons used in the performance of duty
  • Possess a valid Rhode Island operator’s driving license
  • Have no tattoos that are visible while in uniform (the use of a flesh-colored sleeve is acceptable to conceal tattoos from the upper arm to the wrist bone). Please note: candidates are not allowed to have any tattoos that are considered offensive, extremist, sexist or racist.

 

Applicants will undergo a physical agility test, written examination, oral board interview, extensive background investigation, medical exam and psychological exam. Successful candidates will be admitted to the Capitol Police Training Academy, where they will be provided the education and training needed to serve as Capitol Police Officers.
