Rhode Island’s Congressional delegation is asking the Trump Administration not to delay federal funding for the repair of the failed Rhode Island Department of Transportation Washington Bridge and other projects in the state.

The Biden Administration announced the $220 million for the Washington Bridge on October 21, 2024.

It is unclear why the Biden administration did not release the funds before the Trump administration came into office.

In a letter dated January 25, 2025 and addressed to Matthew Vaeth, the Acting Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo wrote that they are concerned with the “lingering uncertainty about the status of funding” as it “threatens to disrupt work on [this] essential infrastructure project.”

The Congressional delegation said it is “alarmed the [Trump] Administration is blocking the release of over $600 million in competitive grant funding for more than 10 Rhode Island transportation projects,” including $220 million for the bridge.

The Biden Administration had touted the millions in funding for Rhode Island and other states last fall.

"Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the Biden-Harris administration is carrying out ambitious, complex transportation projects that will shape our country’s infrastructure for generations to come,” said now-former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at the time. “With this latest round of awards, dozens of major and much-needed projects – projects that are often difficult to fund through other means – are getting the long-awaited investments they need to move forward.”
