RI PowerPlayer: Seth Price

Every week, GoLocalProv shines the spotlight on one individual who is making an impact on Rhode Island. This week, GoLocalProv sat down with Seth Price, a business innovator who serves as the VP of Marketing at Placester and the creator of the Craft of Marketing podcast series to talk about his current and future plans.
Tell us, Seth-- what are your priorities for 2015? You have some big ideas, tell us about them.
I love helping businesses grow and I couldn't be more excited about 2015. We're in the midst of the biggest communication transformation in human history, right now the vast majority of the 7 billion people on the planet can communicate instantly via web based and mobile devices that fit in the palms of our hands. Creating and sharing ideas has never been easier, getting attention has never been cheaper. This is a connection economy and I'm focusing 100% of my efforts on experimenting with what works and then sharing that learning with others, whether it be my team, community, friends or my network. One example is passion project I just launched on KickStarter that got funded in just 7 days. It's a marketing podcast called the Craft of Marketing, it features behind the scenes Interviews with marketers, creatives, and entrepreneurs on what’s working today to succeed in business. The fact that that it’s possible for 1 individual to create something of this caliber without a big studio would have been unfathomable just 5 short years ago.

I am innately curious, and I definitely have issues with authority. I'm sure that hurt me a bit in school. I felt like somewhat of an outsider as a kid, moved a lot, only child of a single parent until I was 16. It forced me to be self reliant, create my own destiny, mostly because I wanted my life to be different. Though I had paper routes and mowed lawns, I started my first real job at a sandwich shop when I was 13 I was highly motivated, the first one in to work sort of kid, within a few months, my boss had me opening or closing the shop, making bank deposits, paying vendors. He even gave me the combination to the safe. I was so psyched that someone trusted me with that much responsibility. I couldn't think of anything else to do but try harder. That experience has influenced everything I've done since,
What does a day in Seth Price’s life look like?
On work days I get up between 4 and 5am, I don't spend much time on morning rituals, a glass of water and a good espresso are enought to get me going. I listent to audio books and podcasts on my commute, I love mornings because it’s highly productive time without distractions and I like being in the office before my team, I often do my content creation in the morning, writing blog posts for the publications where I am a contributor. I then process a few hundred emails and review our stats, I'm a fan of inbox zero, though I admit that it's a game you can never really win. I try to meet with our CEO early to recap the previous day and discuss ideas. After 9am it's generally non stop meetings or phone calls. Lunch in the office, at my desk or with colleagues or clients. I usually leave the office around 7pm. I’m a CrossFit fanatic and try to get there 4 days a week, I've found that I'm nicer when I work out consistently, my form of therapy. When I get home, I help put the kids to bed, then cook dinner. That helps me unwind. My wife's gotten used to eating late, the big selling point is that we get some quiet time to connect after our respective work days. I am trying to get more sleep, but most nights I don’t get into bed until well after 11. I love to sleep but hate going to bed.

Balancing time is a big challenge for me. I have so many ideas and tend to be hyper driven, making time to nurture relationships and take care of myself are the first things that suffer when I'm pushing hard. Saying no is a muscle I am trying to flex more often, but I may be the only one that thinks that.
Tell us something that hardly anyone knows about you.
I love fighting, it's like a physical form of chess, I started studying karate when I was 7 and then Brazilian Jui Jitsu for the last 15 years, my only regret is that my body doesn't heal like it used to.
OK -- now for the lightning round!
Role Model: OK, this is hard, I learn from everyone around me, a bit like a sponge, but in a good way. If pressed, I would have to say my wife, she is the most beautifully zen person I've ever met and I need that around me.
Best Beach: Second Beach in Newport after tourist season. The whole family has wet suits, so we go until October.
Favorite Restaurant: I can't pick just one, New Rivers, Nick's on Broadway, Persimmon and Coal Fired Pizza top my list, I'm still waiting for world class Sushi to make it Rhode Island.
Best Coffee Shop: Bolt Coffee at the Dean Hotel and the Shop Providence on Wickenden St. Finally the coffee I'm used to getting when I travel to Boston or New York right in my backyard. this is a big win for me, I travel for good coffee.
Recent books: Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek, It’s an inspiring book the traits that good leaders share.
