RI Resource Recovery Releases Guidelines for Fireworks Disposal
People often focus on the dangers of fireworks when they are lit and used, but according to guidelines set forth by the RI Resource Recovery – the owner and operator of the Materials Recycling Facility and Central Landfill - improper disposal of fireworks can be just as dangerous.
According to the guidelines, ignoring disposal rules can put lives in danger as well as cause serious property damage.
“Consumer use of fireworks in R.I. has only been legal since 2010, and people may not know about the best practices for disposal,” said Gary Maddocks, chief of security at R.I. Resource Recovery. “After the backyard celebration, take the time to bag and dispose the leftover pyrotechnics safely and bring them to the Fire Marshal. When something goes wrong with fireworks, it happens very quickly and without warning. The damage can be irrevocable and life changing. Fortunately, it’s preventable.”
Fireworks in any condition – whether used, unused, or duds, - should be places in a paper bag and brought to the RI State Fire Marshal for disposal. The Fire Marshal’s office is located at 118 Parade Street in Providence; fireworks can be dropped off Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.
Guidelines
RI Resource Recovery has three major guidelines for safe fireworks disposal. To avoid injury and property damage:
· Never place fireworks in recycling bins or carts, or garbage cans. The explosives, even in trace amounts, can ignite through friction, causing an explosion, fire and injury to waste handlers, pets and anyone near the containers.
· Do not douse them in water because that may make cause an unexpected explosion. Water may change the composition of fireworks and make them unstable.
· Similarly, don’t store fireworks in plastic bags. The static electricity created by movement can create an ignition source for the fireworks.
