Violations reported by inspectors ranged from such transgressions as accumulation of debris on equipment, lack of adequate hand washing facilities, improper food storage, to open holes in doors and flooring --  an infraction that violates the state requirement that "insects, rodents, and animals not present," and in some cases, resulted in the discovery of dead rodents by the inspector.

Latest Report + Methodology

In February 2015, GoLocal looked at the health inspections for the prior three years (2012, 2013, and 2014) available on the state's database.

Now, GoLocal has updated the rankings for the latest reviews of Rhode Island's schools, accounting for violations documented during inspections from December 11, 2014, through December 11, 2016.

GoLocal counted and ranked the schools -- who are all expected to adhere to the same state standards -- that had been inspected during the most recent two-year timeframe, counting the violations noted on each visit made by an inspector during that period.

Breaking Down the Schools

The Rhode Island Department of Health now splits schools into three categories, for the sake of reporting

DOH Public Information Officer Joseph Wendelken explained the distinctions on Tuesday.

School commissary – A centralized location at which food is prepared and then transported to schools. (For example, this happens in Providence, where they prepare thousands of meals every day.)

School satellite – A location that receives and serves food that was prepared at a commissary.

School in-feed – A location that prepares and serves its own food (as opposed to a commissary or satellite, which does one or the other).

While the majority of schools inspected were satellite schools, the number most represented on the list of highest violations was not surprisingly in-feed schools.

Of the thirty schools listed, two schools made the list of highest violators in the commissary category-- Ponaganset and Providence Career and Tech, and five "satellite" schools also landed on the list - Arlington School in Cranston, Frank Spaziano Annex in Providence, the Providence Academy of International Studies, Village Green Charter School in Providence, and Wickford Middle School.
