RISD Faculty Planning No Confidence Vote Against President

GoLocalProv has learned that the faculty at RISD planning to hold a no confidence vote today against President John Maeda.

Just four years ago the faculty held a no confidence vote against Maeda’s predecessor, Roger Mandle. At the time, members of the faculty, which is unionized, cited the “disproportionate growth in the upper-level administration of the college has bred resentment and suspicion among the other constituencies at RISD,” according to a statement quoted in the Brown Daily Herald.

Disagreement over a strategic plan for the university is reportedly one of the reasons behind the no confidence vote this time around.

Faculty representatives could not be reached for comment in time for publication.

Maeda, the former associate director of research at the MIT Media Lab, has served as president since 2008.
