Schools Funding Formula to Become Law Today

Gov. Don Carcieri will sign into law a new funding formula for public schools in Rhode Island today.

The law will dramatically reform how public schools in the state a funded. Under the new system, state aid will be based on a per-pupil formula of $8,295, but the amount will be increased by 40 percent for students in the free and reduced lunch program.

The signing will be at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Rhode Island Foundation. The leaders of the House and Senate as well as Education Commissioner Deborah Gist will be present at the ceremony.
