Fourth Place Top School: Barrington High School

Barrington High School, though ranked number four, actually outperformed our overall winner in four out of six testing categories.  It is also the only school that was ranked either first or second in each of those six categories.  A relatively low per-student budget – meaning fewer teachers and fewer resources – drops Barrington to the number four spot.

But the school’s excellence is more than just a matter of the numbers. In addition to classes in French, German, and Spanish, Barrington High offers Mandarin Chinese and Latin. The school also has a robust, multi-media journalism program, with its own morning television news show—called “Sunrise on Eagle’s Wings”—and a lively monthly school newspaper, The Talon. The school also shows it is on the cutting edge with student groups like Future Business Leaders of America—which builds real-world know-how into the extracurricular environment.

The school consistently is recognized by local and national observers as one of the best. Just last week, two of its students became Rhode Island’s Presidential Scholars for 2010, according to publicschoolreview.com.
