Stabbing at Cumberland Farms on Smith Street

Colonel Arthur Martins, Chief of Police of the North Providence Police Department announced Saturday night that at approximately 4:00 PM members of the North Providence Police and Fire Departments were notified of a stabbing that had occurred inside the Cumberland Farms located at 2064 Smith St.  Both the victim and suspect were reported to be males.

“While officers and other public safety personnel were being sent to the scene, police dispatchers were made aware that the suspect had fled the store and was being followed by several witnesses.  The witnesses were able to direct responding officers to the location of the suspect,” according to police.

Police said that that they used a Taser to subdue the alleged perpetrator, “The suspect was apprehended in the area of 2026 Smith St. after a brief struggle.  During the struggle, the suspect was subdued with the use of a Taser.”

The victim was transported to RI Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The knife used in the stabbing was recovered inside Cumberland Farms. 

The suspect is currently being held at North Providence Police headquarters pending arraignment.
