June is National Migraine Month, and the Rhode Island State House will be illuminated in purple until June 30 to raise awareness for the health issue.

June 29 has also been designated Migraine Monday by the Association of Migraine Disorders.  Migraine sufferers and supporters have been invited to wear purple and a pair or sunglasses on their head or around their neck to symbolize the darkness patients often seek when suffering an attack.

“We all know someone who suffers from migraine disease. Now is the time for everyone to stand up and demand better,” said Dr. Frederick Godley, president of the Association of Migraine Disorders and an otolaryngologist at University Otolaryngology in Providence. “Let’s raise awareness and increase the funding and research to help put an end to the misery migraineurs face every day.”

More on Migraines

Migraine headaches vary in intensity, but are often accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. Symptoms such as facial and ear pressure and loss of balance can also arise.

According to the Association of Migraine Disorders, nearly 25 million work and and school days are lost every year to the disease, resulting in a loss of $13 billion a year in worker productivity.

Founded in 2012, the Association of Migraine Disorders is a Rhode Island-based nonprofit organization that provides reliable information to migraine sufferers, educates healthcare providers and funds migraine research with the aim of improving the diagnosis and treatment of migraine disorders. The Association was established by otolaryngologists (ear, nose and throat doctors) who recognized that people suffering from migraine disorders exhibit many neurological symptoms beyond headaches that are often overlooked – leading to misdiagnoses and mistreatments and causing unnecessary suffering and economic consequences for millions. Through a unique emphasis on coordinating and consulting with experts from other fields of medicine, the Association intends to explore the common features of migraine-related disorders.
