Study Identifies Potential Transit Routes in Downtown Providence

As part of a larger state-wide program of transit investments, the Providence Core Connector Study, initiated by RIPTA and the City of Providence, is exploring the impact of improved transportation choice in a densely developed two mile corridor of downtown Providence. Both agencies agree a multi-modal transportation system is a key part of Rhode Island’s vision for economic growth and environmental sustainability.

New Routes Would Connect Key Neighborhoods

Based on public input received at community open houses in September, RIPTA and the City have identified three potential routes for a new streetcar or bus service to better connect Upper South Providence, Downcity, and College Hill with the central bus hub in Kennedy Plaza and rail services at the Providence Amtrak station. A public forum presenting the results of a comparative analysis weighing the relative strengths, weaknesses, benefits, costs, and impacts of each potential route option will be held on December 9th at the Providence Central Library.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend this session and provide input on the selection of a route to be considered in more detail, including the potential operation of enhanced bus or streetcar services. Doors open at 5pm, presentation begins at 5:30pm. Visit www.ProvidenceCoreConnector.com for more information.
