Survey Labels Providence "Least Bible-Minded City" of 2013

Providence was named the "Least Bible-Minded" city in America according to a recent study conducted by the American Bible Society (A.B.S.).

Providence maintains its title as America's "Least Bible-Minded" metropolis, a distinction that it held in last year's American Bible Society survey as well. This year, the Rhode Island capital beat out traditional heathen heavyweights like Las Vegas, New York, and San Francisco.

According to the most recent research conducted by the A.B.S., only nine percent of Providence residents can be said to be "Bible-minded," less than a fifth of the total in top-ranked Chattanooga, Tennessee. This despite a 2010 survey from the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA) that showed that almost half a million Rhode Islanders, or about 43% of the state's population, self-identify as Catholic. "Not surprisingly," the A.B.S. found East Coast cities to be by and large less Bible-minded than their Southern peers, with none of the top fourteen finishers coming from North of the Mason-Dixon line.
