Police said they attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle, which had New Jersey plates.

The vehicle, according to police, crossed the intersection and sped off.

According to police, as the suspect vehicle approached the intersection of Bellevue Avenue and Cranston Street it struck a pedestrian who was in the crosswalk.

Police said the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed out of the city onto Route 6 before merging onto 95 South and eventually 195 East. Police said it should be noted while on the highway the vehicle continued to operate recklessly weaving in and out of traffic and driving in the breakdown lane.

After the vehicle crossed over the Providence line into East Providence, East Providence law enforcement took over the pursuit.

Providence police said they monitored a broadcast from dispatch that the vehicle eventually came to a halt in East Providence at the intersection of Dexter Road and Massasoit Avenue where the occupants fled.

Police are currently searching for the suspects.

The pedestrian struck in Providence was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries.
