The 50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders UPDATED

GoLocal reached out many of Rhode Island’s experts and influencers in a range of fields to ask them who are the greatest living Rhode Islanders. The criteria was defined, but of course has elements that are amorphous. First, they need to have lived and work in Rhode Island — they need a significant connection.

To be selected for the list, one simply could not have just attended college in RI and then gone to do great things nor could they have worked just a small portion of their careers. Thus, former Brown University President Vartan Gregorian who served as President of Brown does not qualify, not does Family Guy creator and RISD grad Seth MacFarlane.

To be a living great Rhode Islander - this must be your state in residence -- or spirit.

The list was sparked by a puzzling list of the World’s Greatest Leaders developed by Fortune magazine that created great controversy in Rhode Island, as sitting Governor Gina Raimondo was selected for the list.

For residents in Rhode Island, the first 18 months have been rather unremarkable and her approval rating is around 30 percent. Fortune describes its great leaders with the following:  "Especially striking in our new ranking of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders is how many of them you may not recognize. In our media-saturated, personality-obsessed global culture, how can that be? Yet it is so, and that’s what makes this group so heartening."

How "Greatest" Were Chosen

In developing this list of greatest living Rhode Islanders, it was a challenge. Those bigger than life leaders —like political titans Bruce Sundlun, John Chafee, Claiborne Pell are not easy to replace. And, some of our most talented have have moved out of Rhode Island and are now living and working elsewhere pursuing their amazing careers. They are no longer connected to RI.

What was refreshing was how many of Rhode Island’s greats are tied to our colleges and universities -- a cornerstone to Rhode Island's success. Each on the list was distinct and very few on the Greatest Living are also on GoLocal's biannual 50 Wealthiest and Most Influential. Great does not equate exclusively to wealth.

Some on this list are well known in the state, but many have greater awareness in their field outside of Rhode Island. The list is meant to spark discussions about what we value and how excellence is achieved.

Finally, please share your thoughts (respectively) as everyone on this list deserves recognition and has made great contributions -- they may not make your list, but they did make ours. Enjoy the greatness as pound for pound no state may have more talent.
