The Confederate Flag Has Come Down in South Carolina

The Confederate Flag outside of the Capitol Building in South Carolina was taken down in a ceremony on Friday morning. The flag had been there for 54 years but was removed after the murder of nine black parishioners on June 17.

"The confederate flag needs to come down across the country, it's a symbol of hatred, not of heritage. It needs to be put in a museum. I applaud South Carolina for stepping up and doing the right thing. Who would have thought two months ago this would happen," said Jim Vincent, NAACP Providence Branch President.

Cornell William Brooks, the National NAACP President and CEO said on July 9  " The confederate battle flag as a symbolic stain of racism has been dismissed from the state Capitol grounds and may now be deposited to a museum."

"We need a person of color in command staff in the Providence police department. There's not one African American above the rank of Sergeant. The majority of people in Providence are people of color, and we need a person of color in command," continued Vincent. "Generally, police-community relations are good, and I want to applaud Mayor Elorza for restarting the Midnight Basketball League. I will be meeting with him soon however to talk about appointing someone from the African American community to the rank of Major."
