Just four years ago, the City was led by Mayor David Cicilline, Council President Peter Mancini and President Pro Tempe was Josephine DiRuzzo.

The expected line up of Elorza, Luis Aponte (Council President) and Sabina Matos (President Pro Tempe) creates a trio of Latinos that is the start a new era in the City.

The shift in power at the top is significant. New leaders bring new priorities and different life experiences. While Elorza was elected with the strong support of the East Side, all three of the new leaders (Elorza, Aponte and Matos) all grew up and live in neighborhoods that are very different from the East Side.

Elorza - faces significant challenges
After the Democratic primary, Elorza re-introduced himself and said, “The bottom line is I grew up here, my family struggled, and I know what it’s like to grow up in a school system and in a city where it’s too easy for kids to fall behind and fall through the cracks.”

Elorza’s life story and experiences set that stage for the potential of a new approach. While the top three have changed, some of Providence's most powerful remain the same.

Elorza added at the post-primary press conference, “Then, there were those who didn’t know the right people, who didn’t run in the right circles, who didn’t support the right politician, and certainly didn’t have any money to give anybody. They lived in another city entirely.”

The future of Providence is under new leadership -- and here are the players.
