Over the past 15 years, convicted New England crime boss Raymond Patriarca, Jr., has been embroiled in a legal battle with strip club owner Richard “Dick” Shappy and Joseph Dina, a car dealer in New Jersey, over an alleged stolen Shelby AC Cobra — one of the most sought-after cars in the world. It's estimated to be worth $1 million or more.

The case is a remarkable Rhode Island story, not just by who the litigants are, but also who the lawyers are and what the litigation is over.

Unusual for Mob Bosses to File Lawsuits

Patriarca, Jr., aka Junior, sued Shappy and Dina in Providence Superior Court, alleging that they were involved with the theft of his prized Shelby AC Cobra, and the case is still going.

More about the car in a minute.

Junior claims in his lawsuit, first filed in 2010, that “in or around 1993, the Shelby was stolen, that is, taken without [Junior’s] knowledge and consent from the Rhode Island location where [he] had it stored.”

The car was stolen while Junior was in federal prison. In June of 1992, Junior was sentenced to serve eight years and one month  — he was not eligible for parole. Federal District Court Judge Mark Wolf was less than flattering when sentencing him, calling him a “weak” and “ambivalent” leader of organized crime.

Junior was 47 at the time of the sentencing — today he is 80. He led the New England crime family for just a few years after the death of his father — Raymond, Sr. — who dominated organized crime not just in New England, but whose tentacles reached to casinos in Las Vegas and Havana, race tracks in Massachusetts, gold mines in Mexico, and on and on. The senior Patriarca was close with Frank Sinatra, allegedly bribed top politicians in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, and even had a close relationship with the President of the American Nazi Party.

According to FBI files first published by GoLocal in 2015, Raymond Sr., who died in 1984, led organized crime in New England and beyond for nearly five decades.  His death created the void that led to Junior’s ascent — although it was short-lived.

The Cadillac Lounge — Shappy’s History

Shappy, one of the targets of Junior's lawsuit, is the owner of the Cadillac Lounge, an adult entertainment facility — a strip joint. Shappy’s Cadillac Lounge markets itself as "a world of unmatched luxury and indulgence...from the instant you arrive, you'll be immersed in an evening of elegance and charm, only at Providence’s most iconic and award-winning gentleman’s club.”

The club is also known for FBI raids. In 2011, GoLocal reported:

The venue found itself in the news again, most recently in January 2011, when the former leader of the New England Mafia, Luigi "Baby Shacks" Manocchi, was arrested on conspiracy and extortion charges for allegedly accepting protection payments from both the Cadillac Lounge and the Satin Doll in downtown Providence.

The FBI also had a lot to say.

And Shappy’s club faced lawsuits from dancers who accused it of violating federal labor standards. In 2019, it reached a $1.25 million settlement with dancers who claimed they were improperly classified and denied wages and overtime pay, raising questions about fair labor practices in strip clubs statewide.

In addition to his club, Shappy is known as a car aficionado. His collection of cars is reported to be valued in the millions. He has his own retail shop for vintage cars.

The other defendant in the case is Dina, a New Jersey resident who admits to having a Shelby, but claims that it is not Junior’s car. He does admit that he purchased parts of a Shelby from Shappy, but not a whole car, and not Junior’s car.

Junior Alleges in His Suit

In Junior's lawsuit, he makes multiple claims against Dina and Shappy, but the strip club owner is the focus of his ire.

Shappy has denied the claims.

The legal fight has gone back and forth. There have been more than 91 court entries over the past 15 years.

What Is a Shelby AC Cobra and the Value

The original Cobras were manufactured in the early 1960s by Carroll Shelby, who merged a lightweight British AC chassis with powerful Ford V8 engines. Only about 998 original Shelby AC Cobras were produced between 1961 and 1968. Junior alleges in his lawsuit that his was a 1964 model CSX2396. The value of the vehicle appears to be $1 million or more, according to recent sales and auctions.

Junior’s lawsuit claims that after the Shelby was stolen, Shappy had it in his possession, but he denies ever having had Junior's car.

The Lawyers

Today, the lawyers representing the three litigants are a who's who of Rhode Island politics.

Former Chair of the Rhode Island Republican Party Brandon Bell is Junior’s attorney.

Representing Shappy is former Rhode Island Speaker of the House John Harwood.

And, the auto dealer from New Jersey, Dina, is represented by former Republican State Representative Richard Fluery.

The three politicians have been involved in major political machinations in the state over the past 40 years.

Where Is the Shelby?

We may never know where Junior's Shelby is.  Junior claims that the car was stolen from him, then went to Shappy, who then transferred it to Dina.

Those two deny it. They only admit that Dina has a Shelby, but it is not Junior’s. And, Dina did buy parts from Shappy, but there is no connection.

Rumors around the courthouse are that the case is poised to be formally dismissed, maybe as early as this week.
