On June 29, 2004, Rhode Island became the seventh state in the nation to pass into law a bill prohibiting smoking in public places and workplaces in the the state. This law, covering all restaurants, bars, public and private indoor workplaces, went into effect on March 1, 2005.

“What we take for granted now – the ability to work, dine or spend time in a restaurant, a bar, at the store, in the office or on the factory floor without having to breathe in other people’s toxic smoke – this was a groundbreaking concept in 2004,” states Karina Holyoak Wood, executive director of Tobacco Free RI.

This law and the decade of smoke free work and public places has had significant health benefits for Rhode Islanders. Rhode Island's adult smoking rate has seen a dramatic reduction from 23% in 2001 to 17.4% in 2010.

The youth cigarette smoking has dropped from 35% in 2001 to 8.1% in 2013. Rhode Island currently has the second lowest youth smoking rate in the U.S.
