“Hospitals can put action plans in place for improvement on any of the topic areas included in the survey. Action plans may be for specific units or the hospital as a whole. In general, we’re seeing more focus on trying to ensure a quiet care environment for patients, so units can be as conducive to healing as possible. Many hospitals also now have staff education and training programs in place that focus on enhancing the patient experience," said Pat Noga, PhD, RN, Vice President of Clinical Affairs at MHA.

"A study found that more than 400,000 patients a year are dying in our nation’s hospitals, not from their illnesses, but from preventable medical errors and the poor care they are receiving in our hospitals. Dying from poor care in a hospital is now the third leading cause of death in America. That is a shocking statistic," said Kelly-Wiiiams.

"These are the outcomes we need to be tracking – medical errors, readmission, patient falls, patient mortality – and comparing them to RN to patient staffing limits as, according to the medical research, all of these poor outcomes can be prevented when a nurse has a safe limit on their patient assignments."
