Top House Progressive Democrat Calls on Legislature to Get to Back to Work

Rep. Aaron Regunberg
On Sunday, RI Progressive Democrats of America called for Speaker Nick Mattiello to be removed from his leadership position, “Mattiello’s childish, thuggish action mimics Trump and is an embarrassment to Democrats and the state of Rhode Island.”

Just hours later senior advisor for the Democratic Party, Bill Lynch called the Progressives, “This criticism is not surprising coming from a small out-of-touch extremist group that is not affiliated with our Democratic Party.”

Despite the rancor, one leading House progressive Democrat says the legislature should get back to work.

Speaker Nick Mattiello
“This session had the potential to be the most successful year for the passage of significant progressive policy of any I can remember. Then, on Friday, insider politics got in the way. I refuse to give up on the issues - earned sick time, disarming domestic abusers, increasing the minimum wage, and more - which can make such a concrete difference in the lives of our constituents,” said East Side of Providence State Representative Aaron Regunberg.

“And I think the vast majority of Rhode Islanders agree, and want the General Assembly to put people over politics and return as quickly as possible to finish our job. I have committed to doing everything I can to push for that end, and - after taking a day to regroup from an exhausting and frustrating week - am fired up and ready to begin that work,” said Regunberg.
