Two RI State Police Cruisers Hit By Alleged Impaired Driver, Trooper Injured

The Rhode Island State Police report that on Monday two State Police cruisers were struck by a suspected impaired operator.

State Police were investigating a motor vehicle crash on Route 95 South, south of the Orms Street overpass. The State Police cruisers were both parked in the low-speed lane of travel with their emergency lights activated when a red Honda traveling south on Route 95 struck the first cruiser pushing it to the left and continued forward striking the second cruiser.

The operator of the Honda, identified as Katie Tornez, age 22 of Providence, was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicating Liquor and/or Drugs, blood alcohol content unknown, and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test, first offense.

Tornez was held overnight pending a Monday arraignment at Sixth Division District Court in Providence.

One of the Trooper was transported to Rhode Island Hospital and released with minor injuries. The Trooper's name was not disclosed.
