For the Mayor of the fourth ranked city in GoLocalProv's Rhode Island's Best Communities ranking, it is about improving quality of life.

“The last few years, we have really been working to enhance how we live in Warwick. We have added 121 acres of waterfront with the Rocky Point land,” said Mayor Scott Avedisian in an interview with GoLocalProv. “Then we added 18 more acres that created a walking path and access in Warwick Neck.”

For Allan Fung, who is Mayor of second ranked Cranston, he sees the key to success as financial stewardship.

“We watch our spending and that has allowed us to improve our bond rating to the highest level in decades,” said Fung. “We have been able to do a lot, build a rainy day fund, improve our infrastructure and develop an award winning library.”

Both Avedisian and Fung are long-time Mayors of the second and third largest cities respectfully and both have melded a balance between the financial aspects of the job and the delivery of services. “Picking up trash matters. We don’t have a big crime issue, so we try to focus on minimizing speeding and delivering quality services,” said Avedisian.

Commerce Centers

Both cities are focused about building areas of concentrated commerce. For Fung, Cranston has seen tremendous success and growth around Garden City and Chapel View. The two shopping areas adjacent to one another have become a hub for quality retail shopping in Rhode Island

“It is really popping and has become the heart of the city in many ways,” said Fung. “And we don’t have parking meters.”

The comment by Fung juxtaposes Cranston's retail success with blistering criticism of Providence’s leadership by many business leaders over parking meters and panhandling. Providence fell for a range of reasons from #2 in the last ranking to #7.

"Our approach is to help every size business," said Fung.

Warwick's economic development strategy is similar. Avedisian told GoLocal about the effort to cluster business and community activities, citing a range of successes, including recruiting Ocean State Theater, the redevelopment of Pontiac Mills, and bringing Salve Regina to Warwick. Warwick improved from a #10 ranking to #4 in this year's ranking.
