U.S. Attorney General Garland Refuses to Take Questions at Press Event

On Tuesday, the Rhode Island press corps was invited to cover a visit by U.S. General Merrick Garland to Providence on Wednesday

The advisory stated:

Tomorrow morning, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland will be in Providence, Rhode Island, to visit the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Rhode Island and meet with U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Cunha as well as federal, state, and local law enforcement leaders.

The Attorney General and U.S. Attorney will provide brief opening remarks at the top, which will be open to press.

The event was scheduled to start at 9:40 AM, and the media was required to clear security at 8:15 AM.

When arriving, the press was only then notified by Emma Dulaney, the press secretary for Garland, that the Attorney General would not take questions. The refusal to take questions is unprecedented.

At that point, GoLocal packed up its camera and left the event.

"This event smells political. There are a number of pending Department of Justice issues in Rhode Island. The Attorney General should wait until after the election to do photo op events or else be willing to answer reasonable questions," said Josh Fenton, CEO and co-founder of GoLocal.

In January, the U.S. Department of Justice began an investigation of the failure of the Washington Bridge.

The DOJ has made no public comment since January.

EDITOR’S NOTE: GoLocal does not cover press events in which officials refuse to take questions.
