U.S. National Sailing Hall of Fame Votes to Move from Annapolis to Newport

2018 Hall of Fame inductees
The National Sailing Hall of Fame is moving from Annapolis, Maryland to Newport Rhode Island according to the Capital Gazette in Annapolis.

“Barring last-minute discovery of structural or environmental damage, the National Sailing Hall of Fame is relocating to a historic armory in Newport, Rhode Island,” reports the newspaper.

This will give Newport two major Hall of Fames — the National Sailing Hall of Fame will join the International Tennis Hall of Fame as major sports attractions.

According to the reports, the board of directors voted 17-9 on Tuesday for the move to Newport and will be located in the Thames Street Armory Building — a location which has been used for retail for years.

The organization is slated to spend more than $4 million to buy and rehab the Armory.

Newport's legacy as a sailing capital is unmatched -- the legacy of the America's Cup to being the only U.S. stopover to Volvo.

The Hall of Fame is littered with Rhode Island inductees, including: two Herreshoffs, Ted Hood, and former Brown student and America's Cup hero Ted Turner
