Union Blasts McKee Over Nursing Home Closure

Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is blasting Governor Dan McKee for failing to assist one of the top nursing homes in Rhode Island.

On Thursday, the financially troubled Linn Health and Rehabilitation nonprofit nursing home announced it had notified the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) of its intent to close and began the process of notifying 100+ staff, 48 residents, and their families of the decision to discontinue its operations on July 20, 2024.

The nursing home said it had requested help from the McKee administration, but it failed to act.

The union represents almost 1.9 million workers in the United States and Canada.

SEIU 1199NE Said in a Statement Linn Health & Rehab:

“Linn Health and Rehab, one of Rhode Island’s few remaining non-profit nursing homes, has consistently provided high-quality care, maintained appropriate staffing ratios, and supported its union workforce. It is, therefore, incomprehensible why the McKee Administration would deny emergency funding to keep Linn Health open while at the same time providing nearly $80M in Medicaid rate increases set to begin in July that will primarily benefit out-of-state corporations that own the majority of our nursing facilities.

This cash infusion has no built-in accountability measures to ensure funding goes to direct care instead of enriching corporate shareholders. We urgently need Governor McKee to propose a real plan to end our nursing home crisis, not issue more executive orders and blank checks to for-profit nursing homes who are already making millions of dollars in profit.”
