LIVE From Italy: “We Thought This Wouldn’t Apply to Us” - American on Countywide Lockdown

Native Connecticut resident Rebecca Couto da Silva appeared on GoLocal LIVE from her current apartment in Bolazano, Italy, where she is living with daughter, and shared what it’s like to live in a country on lockdown due to coronavirus. 

“I wasn’t originally in a hot spot — originally it was Lombardy and Veneto, where you have Milan and Venice, which were the two regions that were really hard hit, and so decrees came out limiting movement of people there, and the rest of us were thinking OK, this doesn’t apply to us,” said da Silva. “Then it was a Sunday or Monday night, the government said nope this applies to everybody.”

“At this time we’re allowed to go out for basically four reasons — for a medical appointment or another necessity, to get home — if you found yourself outside of your home when you were lockdown, that’s another reason, or to go to work — at first they let most businesses stay open but then they only allowed essential businesses,” she said. 

“So now for example you can do your shopping, but only one person per household — and it has to be essential shopping — food shopping, shopping for your pets, lightbulbs, toiletries, cleaning supplies, but you have to carry this declaration with you or you can get fined,” da Silva added.
