The family of Angelina Cruz Hernandez, the 76-year-old woman struck in the area of 575 Dyer Avenue in Cranston last Saturday, is holding a candlelight vigil to be held in her honor on Friday.

The family is now asking Riverbend Apartments management for access to Cruz Hernandez’ apartment in order to provide her with a proper burial.

Angelina was a loved mother, grandmother, and friend who was taken from us too soon. We extend an invitation to her family, friends and neighbors to join us in a candlelight vigil to honoring her life. The vigil will take place on Friday, January 17th between 5 and 6 p.m. where Angelina’s life was prematurely taken at the Riverbend Apartments (575 Dyer Avenue, Cranston).

The family would like to honor Angelina through a proper burial, which has been made impossible by the Riverbend Apartments’ management. We plead for your help so that we can enter her home and obtain necessary funeral documentation that contained her burial plot along with her favorite dress for her body at the funeral.

As it stands, the locks to her apartment have been changed, making it impossible for her many mourning children and grandchildren to mourn her appropriately. All we ask of Riverbend Apartments and their corporate offices is that the family be allowed to enter her apartment in order to come together in the last place she was in comfort. This is a great injustice to her memory and to all who only want to grieve in peace.

Chief of Cranston Police Michael Winquist told GoLocal that the police have tried to intervene, but as the Cruz Hernandez did not have an emergency contact or next of kin on her lease, Riverbend is claiming it is a legal issue to allow people into the apartment.

"The family's attorney likely has to go through probate court," said Winquist. "We did try and mediate, but these things get complicated. We're hoping this gets resolved quickly."
