The Westerly Yacht Club will be voting Wednesday on whether or not to allow women as full members, less than a month after members of the club had once again voted to deny women full membership

The RI ACLU said following the June vote that the club's actions violate the state's civil rights act; female leaders in the state criticized the males-only membership policy

In a letter to members of the club, recording Secretary Joe Thon apprised members of the upcoming meeting and vote, noting that the board of directors felt that the club "could be negatively impacted if [it does] not reconsider allowing women to become full members."

"I applaud the leadership of those men who have stepped forth and said we need to address this. It's basically discriminatory because we don't have the same opportunities," said Julie Lynn Cardinal, who is the daughter of a past club Commodore, to GoLocalProv.com.

Members of the club had voted 207-171 in June to change the bylaws to allow women to become full members, but it failed because a two-thirds majority is required to change the bylaws.

"I do believe the numbers are there [this time] and I hope they come out. The open discussion should be great, and I hope some stay don't stay away because they are dissuaded from it," said Cardinal. "I think the "anti" [allowing female members] folks are just done with this by now."

"Look, it got so much in the way of headlines for what it is," said Cardinal. "I don't think it's about taking away a private club's rights. It's that they promote themselves as a family club, open to everyone -- so by that nature, it's not a men's club, but at the core it is."

Letter to Members

The decision was made at a special meeting of the Board of Directors to schedule a special membership meeting for July 13 to once again vote on allowing women to apply for membership.

In the letter send from recording secretary, Thon to members of the Westerly Yacht Club, the reasons listed were as follows:

Three primary factors were influential in making this difficult decision to reconvene the Membership and revote on this previously defeated amendment. These factors are as follows:

First - A significant number of Members feel that they were not offered enough opportunity to speak and ask questions at the prior meeting.

Second - Members have questioned whether we followed proper procedure during our June 15th GM meeting.

Third -- Members as well as your Board of Directors feel that our club could be negatively impacted if we do not reconsider allowing women to become full members.

The letter goes on to state the procedure for the upcoming meeting, closing with, "At the end of the discussion we will once again vote on the amendment to establish gender equality within the club."

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
