UPDATED: Significant Snow Accumulation - How Much Is National Weather Service Forecasting?

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for Rhode Island starting late Monday night into Tuesday. 

ACCUMULATION UPDATED 7:00 AM, SUNDAY

NWS is predicting anywhere from 6 to 10 inches of snow accumulation across for the state — with wind gusts as high as 40 miles per hour.

According to NWS, “Travel [Tuesday] could be very difficult.”

“The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute,” says NWS.

The following is the NWS forecast for the Providence metro area.

Partly sunny, with a high near 49. West wind 6 to 9 mph.

 

Sunday Night

Mostly cloudy, with a low of around 29. Light west wind.

 

Monday

Mostly sunny, with a high near 48. Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph.

Snow likely, mainly after 4 am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 31. Light and variable wind becoming northeast 5 to 7 mph after midnight. The chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch is possible.

 

Tuesday

Snow. High near 36. Breezy, with a northeast wind 11 to 16 mph increasing to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches is possible.

 

Tuesday Night

A chance of snow before 10 pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 17. Blustery, with a northwest wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. The chance of precipitation is 50%.

 

Wednesday

Sunny, with a high near 32. Northwest wind 16 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph.
