Woman Arrested 100 Times Has Been In and Out of Prison 28 Times

A continued GoLocal investigation into Shannon Godbout's criminal record raises more questions about the criminal justice system in Rhode Island.

Godbout is the woman who allegedly ran down and killed Roderick MacLeod on Saturday on a country road in Hopkinton. MacLeod was out walking his dogs.

The highly accomplished musician was a Grammy Award nominee as a member of Roomful of Blues and was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame.

On Monday, GoLocal’s review of Godbout’s criminal records found a near-endless number of charges against her.

According to prison records, Godbout’s first trip to the Adult Correction Institution was 13 years ago.

“Our records show her initial commitment was in 2002, with her first sentence being in 2003. Looks like a couple of sentences for driving with a suspended license. 60 days each,” a Rhode Island Department of Corrections spokesperson told GoLocal. 

 

Revolving Door — 28 Times and 2,362 Days

Now, new data provided to GoLocal on Tuesday by the Department of Corrections unveils that Godbout has been in and out of the Adult Correctional Institute 28 times.

Hopkinton police said on Saturday that she had been arrested 100 times.

Further, over the 13 years and the near-endless number of charges, she spent what equates to nearly 6.5 years in Rhode Island's prisons.

“If we add her time Awaiting Trial, Sentenced, and Home Confinement,  Shannon Godbout has been in and out of the ACI 28 separate times since 2002. These incarcerations total approximately 2,362 days on assorted misdemeanor and felony cases,” said J.R. Ventura, Chief of Information & Public Relations / Public Information Officer for the Department of Corrections.

 

Court Date

Godbout was scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday, but it was continued until Wednesday. She is scheduled to appear in front of Judge Mary McCaffrey. She is currently being held without bail.

She is charged with:

- Driving to endanger, resulting in death

- Possession of narcotics, Schedule I/II with intent to distribute, 3rd plus offense
