Providence Police Detectives Major David Laptain and Deputy Police Chief Kevin Lanni provided additional details at a press briefing at noon on Wednesday.
According to Lapatin, the victim -- a 28-year-old female -- was on her way to leave for work when she was stabbed by a 29-year-old man in her driveway.
Her mother came out and tried to intervene and was also stabbed, said Lapatin. The daughter was pronounced dead at the hospital; the mother is undergoing surgery and is in critical condition.
Lanni said that the suspect posed a "serious threat to public safety" and was located a short while later at 399 Public Street; he added that a SWAT team was utilized to enter the residence.
The suspect -- Wesley Clairsainvil -- was apprehended by police.
"This was a terrible situation...that needed to be resolved fast," said Lapatin.
