Coast Guard Veteran, John D. Benton, Jr., of Providence, Dies at 57

John D. Benton, Jr., 57, of Providence, passed away on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at RI Hospital in Providence. 

He was the beloved husband of Joanna Z. Gonzalez. Born in Providence, John was a son of the late John D. Benton, Sr., and Earnestine (Crader) Benton.  John was a correctional officer, recently retired, as well as a Coast Guard Veteran.

He is survived by his children, Brittani L. Taylor of OK, Russell Ford Brown of Warwick, Ashley A. Odom of Pawtucket, Jazandra C. Barros of Providence, Diamond J. Brown of FL, Mikayla D. Benton of Providence, Chelsi A. Benton of Providence, Jordynn D. Robinson of Pawtucket, Khalaya Wilson of MD, and Dyanarah A. Benton of Providence.  John was the cherished grandfather of John, Johneya, Joslyn, Tokyo, Princeton, London, Bria, and Russell.  He leaves behind his siblings James W. Benton, Brook T. Benton, Venessa R. Benton, Frankie L. Benton, Adrienne M. Benton, and Andre J. Benton.

His funeral service will take place on Friday, May 21st, at Truth Tabernacle, 542 Potters Ave, Providence, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.  

Visiting hours: Thursday, May 20th, from 5-8 p.m. 

Burial will be private. 

Flowers can be delivered directly to Truth Tabernacle for the day of the service.
