George Wendt, Beloved “Cheers” Star, Dies at 76
George Robert Wendt Jr., the acclaimed actor and comedian best known for his portrayal of Norm Peterson on the legendary NBC sitcom Cheers, died peacefully in his sleep at his home on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. He was 76 years old.
Born on October 17, 1948, in Chicago, Illinois, Wendt grew up on the city’s South Side in a large Irish-German family59. He attended Campion High School in Wisconsin and later studied at the University of Notre Dame before graduating with a degree in economics from Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri.

It was at Second City that he met his wife, Bernadette Birkett, with whom he shared a marriage of nearly five decades and three children.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1980, Wendt landed small roles in television and film before his breakthrough as Norm Peterson on Cheers in 1982. Over the show’s 11-year run, Wendt appeared in every episode, earning six consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. His character, the affable, beer-loving bar regular Norm, became a television icon—greeted with a chorus of “Norm!” whenever he entered the bar, and beloved for his dry wit and everyman charm.
Beyond Cheers, Wendt’s career spanned more than 100 film and television credits, including roles in Fletch, Forever Young, Airplane II: The Sequel, and Spice World, as well as memorable appearances on Saturday Night Live as Chicago sports superfan Bob Swerski. He also graced the stage in Broadway and West End productions, notably starring in Art and Hairspray.
Wendt was known not only for his comedic timing and relatable persona but also for his humility and generosity. He was a devoted family man, a cherished friend, and a mentor to many in the entertainment industry. His nephew is actor Jason Sudeikis.
He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Birkett; their children, Hilary, Joe, and Daniel; his stepchildren, Joshua and Andrew; and a large extended family.
A statement from his family read: “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever.”
