Korean War Veteran Lester W. Hazard, Sr., of North Kingstown Dies at 93

Lester W. Hazard, Sr., age 93 of North Kingstown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 30, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Amanda (Hallene) McGannon, and the late Alta Jo (Reece) Hazard. Born in Cranston, he was a son of the late Robert E. and Josephine (McDonough) Hazard.

Mr. Hazard served his country with honor in the US Navy during the Korean War. Throughout his service, he completed an impressive 25 missions and was recognized for his bravery with the prestigious Air Medal, amongst many others. After his military career, Mr. Hazard found employment as an air traffic controller at both Quonset Point Naval Air Station and Green Airport, where he dedicated 30 years of his life before retiring. Not only was Mr. Hazard committed to his professional responsibilities, but he also displayed his passion for music and faith as the choir director at Stony Lane Baptist Church for over 25 years. He loved his church, and enjoyed fishing, clamming, blueberry picking, and spending time with his grandchildren, family, and friends.

 

Mr. Hazard was the loving father of Lester W. Hazard, Jr., Walter R. Hazard (wife, Karen), William B. Hazard (wife, Sharon) and John C. Hazard; devoted grandfather of Joshua Difranco Hazard, Emily C. Hazard, Jesse J. Hazard, Shanna Scali, Shawn Norris and the late John C. Hazard, Jr. He was also predeceased by his 8 siblings.

 

A visitation will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2023 from 5-8:30 pm in the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown. Relatives and friends are invited to a Funeral Service on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 10:30 am in the Stony Lane Church, 921 Old Baptist Rd., North Kingstown. His burial with military funeral honors will follow in the RI Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
