Long-Time Providence Parks Employee Elena Marie (Bassi) Ciccone Dies at 75

Elena Marie (Bassi) Ciccone, 75, passed away surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at Rhode Island Hospital. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Raviele) Bassi. Elena was the devoted wife of Senator Frank A. Ciccone, III and treasured mother of Carla and her husband John Rose. She is survived by her sister, Maria Lauro, and pre-deceased by her brothers, Frederick V. Bassi and William C. Bassi. She is survived by many nieces and one nephew.
Elena attended Angelo’s Hair Design of Providence and began working as a hairdresser at Caprice Beauty Salon. She quickly became the family hairdresser for her own mother, mother-in-law and aunts. It was a weekly routine for Elena, with daughter in tow, to visit a relative for a hair trim or an updo. Elena attended Johnson & Wales and worked at Laurel Hill Avenue School before embarking on a twenty-five-year career at the City of Providence Parks Department, where she was a union member of LiUNA Local 1033. Elena was also an active member of The Italo-American Club, Piave Lodge #364 Order of Sons and Daughters of Italy, and Cranston Post 8 Italian-American War Veterans Womens’ Auxiliary. Faith was a cornerstone of Elena’s life and she could be found seated in the same pew every Sunday at 11:30 a.m. mass at Saint Bartholomew Church.

Elena very much enjoyed going out with her friends, aptly named “the crew” whether it was for a good dinner or to watch a basketball game. She shared a close friendship with her son-in-law, John, who she texted daily. They spent a lot of time together and often went to Red Sox games. She spent her summer days with her toes in the sand.
Elena’s pride and joy was her daughter, Carla. Many of their conversations were about rescue dogs, and she was always eager to meet a new one. Elena was a loving caretaker to all of her family dogs and mourned the recent loss of her dog, Rocco. She leaves behind a second Rottweiler, Molly.
Shopping was another pastime high on her list of enjoyments. She was known to be a thoughtful gift giver. If a friend or family member remarked about liking something, it was common for Elena to head out to buy that item for them. Elena will be remembered for having a heart of gold and her unmatched generosity.
Her funeral and visitation will be held Friday, June 14th from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. at “WOODLAWN” Funeral Home, 600 Pontiac Avenue, Cranston followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Bartholomew Church, Providence. Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
