People We Lost in Rhode Island and Across America in 2018

In 2018, we lost a former President and his wife. Closer to home we lost a real estate titan, a former First Lady, a top CEO, and so many more who helped to shape our state.

As the year comes to a close, GoLocal looks back at those we lost and their impact on the history of Rhode Island and our country.

Rhode Islanders spoke out about their losses.

“First Lady Carcieri carried herself with such grace and dignity.  During my eight years on the Governor’s Executive Security Detail, I witnessed firsthand her gentle, caring nature," said North Providence Chief of Police David Tikoian. "She was a very generous and compassionate person, always concerned about others.  Her efforts to help those in need with heating assistance is just a small example of her passion to always give back.  She was a wonderful woman, always seeing the good in people, greeting them with a gentle smile. Those that had the good fortune to meet her will agree she was a very vibrant, uplifting, positive person. I will miss her dearly.”

And when Realtor Melanie Delman passed after a long battle with cancer, her friends, family and clients were heartbroken

“Melanie had been in the battle of her life for years, and battling with the utmost strength and dignity,” expressed Melanie’s sister, Pamela Delman-Hodnett. “We will honor my sister’s memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work she loved so much.”
