Retired Providence Firefighter, Vernon Dennis Dunlap, of Lincoln, Passes at 72

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Vernon and Arlene (Nichols) Dunlap.
He was the beloved husband of Laura Dunlap for 40 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving daughter, Mattie and son Joshua. He was the devoted brother of Lorraine Hunter, and her husband Mac, the late Kathleen Ashley and her husband Tom, and Edward Dunlap. He is also survived by his adoring nieces and nephews.
Vern served his time in the Coast Guard during the Vietnam War from 1968-1972, the Coast Guard Reserve through 1972, and was a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine. He was a graduate of CCRI and Rhode Island College. During his career at the Providence Fire Department, he was a dedicated Firefighter, EMT, Assistant Deputy State Fire Marshal, Inspector, member of the International Association of Fire Firefighters, Junior Fire Setter Coordinator.
In his retirement, Vern enjoyed spending more time with his family, friends, and a three-finger bourbon. He was affectionately referred to as “the bear” by his family for his kind but headstrong personality.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Vernon’s name may be made to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box H, Providence, RI 02901-9979.
