Veteran John Berchmans Etchingham, Jr. of North Kingstown Dies at 89

He proudly served in the United States Navy for twenty-three years, retiring as a lieutenant commander in 1972. He then pursued a Master's Degree in Library Science and worked as a reference librarian at the University of Rhode Island. John believed in civic engagement and was a member of the North Kingstown Republican Town Committee and Zoning Board for several years.
Family was everything to him and he cherished gatherings at the family home in North Kingstown. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Etchingham; four children, John Etchingham, III (wife Lynn) of North Providence, Joseph Etchingham (wife Robin) of Warwick, Marianne Cooper (husband Tom) of North Kingstown, and Maureen Mullen (husband Michael) of Denver. He also leaves his sister, Barbara Etchingham, of Providence; several nieces and nephews; and many loving and wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Etchingham, of New York City.
His services and burial will be private.
